Using CAT tools to translate into Vietnamese: Not easy

CAT tools are an effective way to proceed translation projects for both companies and vendors. However, when using them to translate documents into Vietnamese, translators face several problems.

First of all, with a source document with many charts, pictures, and text formats, using CAT tools will help translators save time because they are free from editing document format. This fact is correct in most cases, except for translating from English into Vietnamese. Some fonts are not supported with Unicode or Vietkey, which are dedicated tools for typing Vietnamese language with special accent marks (for example: á, à, ả, ã, ạ). When the source text in English is typed in a non-Vietnamese-supported font, the target text will look messy because vowels with accent marks automatically change into a supported font. For example, a Calibri text may be inserted by some Time New Roman vowels. These cases request editing font before publishing the final translation.

Second, Spelling Check function does not run in Vietnamese language. It operates quite well in English language so spelling mistakes can be avoided. For Vietnamese language, only the AutoCorrect makes nO uPPERCASE by mistake or INitial CApital problems. Therefore, translating from English to Vietnamese takes translators more time and efforts to review their translation to avoid spelling mistakes.

Moreover, when a source file contains a large volume of data, such as hyperlinks, programming codes, commands, etc., typing problems may occur. For example, letters may disappear or source fonts may be changed. Luckily, this error does not occur with the latest version of CAT tools.

Finally yet importantly, CAT tools cost translators a large sum of money for purchase and upgrade. Generally, it takes US$ 800-900 to purchase and US$200-300 to upgrade a CAT tool. This expensive price makes translators with low rates prefer crack translation-assisted software that can contain viruses or of which some functions may not run smoothly or not be activated.

The table below briefs several main points of three popular CAT tools in Vietnam:
