GTE Localize

WHAT SHOULD YOU CONSIDER WHEN LOCALIZING INTO CHINESE?

  • There are two main varieties of the Chinese language – Traditional Chinese (used in Hong Kong or Taiwan) and Simplified Chinese (used in Mainland China, Singapore, and Malaysia). Using the right variety will help you leave a great impression on your target audiences as it shows your understanding and effort into learning the Chinese language and culture.
  • The Great Firewall of China blocks numerous foreign websites which require you to either get a server in mainland China and Hong Kong or partner with local brands.
  • Baidu – a tailor-made search engine for Chinese internet users is the dominant search engine in China, not Google.
  • QR codes are extremely popular in China.
  • Colours have clear meanings in China. For example, red is the symbol of wealth, luck, and joy while white is death, black is destruction, evil, cruelty, and sadness.
  • Bright colours help increase your sales in China. Try to avoid dark palettes (black, brown, grey, etc.) in your apps or websites.
  • Texts in Chinese are usually 20-30% shorter than in English.
  • Chinese people use two levels of addressing – Informal and Formal to address the second person. For example, 您 (nín) is the formal addressing form for you, sir, madam, while 你 (nǐ) is the informal one. The differences between these two addressing levels affect your way of approaching target audiences in this market.
  • Chinese people use the metric system of measurement: kilogram, meter, etc. Chinese people also have their own measurement system. For example, in the market, instead of using kilograms, they use Jin (1斤 Jin = ½ kg).
  • The date format is year-month-day.
  • The time format is either a 24-hour clock or 12-hour clock with 上午 (AM) or 下午(PM).
  • The full name format is family name followed by the given name.
  • The address format follows the template country – province – city – street name.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

As a Chinese translation company, we provide a wide range of translation services from and into the Chinese language. Some popular Chinese language pairs we work with are English to Chinese, Chinese to English, Japanese to Chinese, Korean to Chinese, Thai to Chinese, Malay to Chinese, Vietnamese to Chinese, Indonesian to Chinese, etc.

To have the exact price of a Chinese translation project, we take many factors that affect translation costs into consideration:

  • Project volume: In most cases, we give the quotation per word or characters. The number of words/characters is the most precise indication for the effort our linguists put into the project.
  • Service required: Some Chinese translation projects only require Translation Only (TO), others need both Translation and Editing (TE), or Translation + Editing + Proofreading (TEP). The more steps a project need, the higher the rate is.
  • Industry expertise: The complexity of the required domain also affects the price of the project. General topics are charged less than high-expertise content.

Our competitive rate for a Chinese translation project starts from $0.06/word. Please contact our team for a quotation for your project.

It depends on the volume, content types, required services, and other project-specific factors. In general, our translator metric is 2,500 words per business day for Chinese translation projects. In some cases, we assign a translation task for multiple translators to handle, with the capacity of 8,000-10,000 words per day, given it’s a standard Translation and Editing job performed by one translator and one editor. For example, if you have a 10,000-word-English-to-Chinese-project, you can expect to receive the translation in about 1 to 1.5 business days.

To get the exact delivery time for your projects, please contact our support team here.

Step 1: Receive and Analyze the project

Our team receive the request from you and calculate the number of words and analyze the content complexity to give you a quotation with the exact price and estimated turn-around time.

Step 2: Prepare source files

The source files are converted into suitable CAT tool format for translation tools.

Step 3: Start the project

We make a timeline and allocate the most suitable linguists for the project based on the content types. The documents are translated and localized by a translator and edited and proofread by other linguists.

Step 4: Quality Assurance

Our PM team reviews the final translations once again before delivery to make sure possible errors are eliminated.

Step 5: Initial Delivery

We deliver the translation to you.

Step 6: Client Feedback

We receive feedback from the clients and make suitable changes as required.

Step 7: Final Delivery

We deliver the final version of the localized document to the clients.

FACTS ABOUT THE CHINESE LANGUAGELess Facts

About the Chinese Language

With nearly 1.4 billion native speakers, combined with its booming economy, China is one of the most potential markets in the world. The number of foreign companies entering this market has been constantly increasing. This creates a high demand for English to Chinese translation.

    • Dating back over 3,000 years, written Chinese is the oldest system of writing in use as a living language with more than 20,000 distinct characters.
    • Chinese joins English, Arabic, French, Russian, and Spanish as one of the six official UN languages.
    • The Chinese language is classified into 10 dialect groups, each of which has its own variations. Among those dialects, Mandarin is the most popular, spoken by 71.5% of the population.

Linguistic Features

    • Chinese uses a logographic writing system (marked by a letter, symbol, or sign to represent a whole word)
    • Chinese is traditionally written in a vertical, columnar fashion from top to bottom and right to left. It is now also written in a horizontal, linear fashion from left to right and top to bottom, like English. Spaces are not used to separate words.
    • Contrary to most languages, Chinese verbs do not change according to person, tense or singular/plural.
