[Infographic] What Are CAT Tools and How They Benefits You?

“Translation and Localization are a “human-only” industry.” That’s what we have heard a lot of the time and maybe the most common myths about the translation industry. The truth is, there’s a powerful tool that most professional agencies and translators use every day to guarantee the best quality and consistency for a translation project. It’s called a Computer-Assisted Translation Tool (or CAT Tool). So what are CAT Tools and how they help translators?

Additional information about the CAT Tools

CAT Tools

1. CAT Tools are different from machine translation software. Many people think that CAT Tools automatically translate the whole documents. In reality, they create a favourable translation environment for translators, helping them complete a translation task quicker and more consistent. The human involvement is still a crucial part of the translation industry.

2. In the past, CAT tools could only be used either online or offline. For example, XTM, Smartcat, or MateCat used to support online projects only while Trados and MemoQ were offline-only software. Nowadays, most CAT Tools integrate offline and online platforms together, making it so much easier for translators to work on translation projects.

3. How to calculate the translation cost in CAT Tools? As mention above, customers don’t have to pay full price for words that have already stored in the Translation Memory. Each type of match will have a different rate. For example, if you have a 1000-word document with 450 no-matched words, 300 fuzzy-matched words, and 250 exact-matched words. The weighted word count for them is 1, 0.7, and 0.25 respectively. (The weighted word count varies. Translators/Agencies and customers will discuss and find the most suitable numbers).

No-matched words x 1.0Fuzzy-matched words x 0.7Exact-matched words x 0.25Adjusted word number
450 x 1

= 450

300 x 0.7

= 210

250 x 0.25

= 62.5

The result is, the customers don’t pay for 1000 words, they only pay for 722.5 words. In short, a lot of money will be saved.
