About Malay language

  • Malay serves as the national language in Malaysia, where it is officially known as Bahasa Malaysia. It is also a major language spoken by those in Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, southern Philippines, and Thailand.
  • While there are nearly 18 million people who speak Malay, there are over 200 million people who use Indonesian, which is considered a form of Malay.
  • The Malay language is written primarily using a Latin alphabet, called Rumi, although there is also an Arabic alphabet called Jawi that is used. Rumi is more common for both formal and informal purposes.
  • There are many dialects in the Malay language. The most popular is the southern dialect of the Malay Peninsula, which is the foundation for the standard Malay language. Other major dialects include Bahasa Indonesian (Malay pidgin) and Baba Malay, which is spoken in many Malaysian-Chinese communities..

Linguistic features

  • Malay does not make use of neither grammatical gender nor plural. For example, orang may mean either “person” or “people”
  • Malay is now written using a Latin alphabet (Rumi), although an Arabic alphabet called Jawi also exists. Rumi is more common for both formal and informal purposes. Nevertheless, Jawi is still used in Malaysia today.
  • The Jawi script is written from right to left and comprises 40 letters, most of which have distinct isolated, initial, medial, and final glyph
  • In written Jawi, Arabic punctuation marks are used.
