Important Factors To Consider When Adapting To Chinese Localization Services

Varieties of Chinese Language: Chinese has two main varieties – Traditional Chinese (used in Hong Kong or Taiwan) and Simplified Chinese (used in Mainland China, Singapore, and Malaysia). Choosing the appropriate variety demonstrates your understanding and effort in learning the Chinese language and culture.

    • Great Firewall of China: The Great Firewall of China restricts access to numerous foreign websites. To overcome this, you may need a server in mainland China or Hong Kong or partner with local brands.
    • Baidu Search Engine: In China, Baidu is the dominant search engine, unlike Google. It’s important to optimize your online presence for Baidu to effectively reach the Chinese audience.
    • QR Codes: QR codes are widely popular in China. Incorporating them into your marketing materials or products can enhance engagement with Chinese consumers.
    • Color Symbolism: Colors hold significant meanings in Chinese culture. For example, red symbolizes wealth and luck, while white represents death. Understanding color symbolism can help you create culturally appropriate designs and visuals.
    • Bright Colors and Design: Bright colors are preferred in China and can positively impact sales. Avoid using dark palettes (black, brown, grey, etc.) in your apps or websites.
    • Text Length: Texts in Chinese are typically 20-30% shorter than their English counterparts. Consider this when designing layouts or allocating space for translations.
    • Addressing and Formality: the Chinese language uses two levels of addressing – informal and formal. Understanding the appropriate level of formality is crucial when addressing your target audience in the Chinese market.
    • Measurement Systems: Chinese people use the metric system (kilograms, meters, etc.) but also have their measurements, such as Jin. Familiarize yourself with the relevant measurement units for accurate localization.
    • Date and Time Formats: Chinese follows the year-month-day format for dates. Time can be expressed in a 24-hour or 12-hour clock with 上午 (AM) or 下午 (PM) indicators.
    • Name and Address Formats: In Chinese, the family name comes before the given name. The address format follows the pattern: country – province – city – street name.

What are differences between Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Mandarin & Cantonese translation?

    Traditional and Simplified Chinese Translation

    Mandarin Translation and Cantonese Translation

    Traditional and Simplified Chinese Translation

Traditional and Simplified are the written forms of Chinese.

    • Character structure: Simplified Chinese characters have fewer strokes than their Traditional counterparts and therefore have simpler, less ornate structures.
    • A number of characters: Traditional uses a single character to express a word or part of a word, Simplified may represent multiple words or concepts using the same character. For example, the character 发 in Simplified Chinese equates to either 髮 (hair) or 發 (become/develop) in Traditional Chinese.
    • Vocabulary: Simplified and Traditional Chinese have some differences in word choice. For example: Happy 快乐 (Simplified), 邴 (Traditional).
    • Location: The forms of Traditional Chinese used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau & Guangdong Province while Simplified Chinese is typically used when translating for mainland China, Singapore, Malaysia, and international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Bank.

    Mandarin Translation and Cantonese Translation

Mandarin and Cantonese are the spoken forms of Chinese.

    • Tones: Mandarin consists of four major tones while Cantonese has six major tones and three additional high, mid, and low-level tones.
    • Vocabulary: There are differences in speaking even on the same word. For example, 你好 (hello) word pronounces in Cantonese is néih hou and in Mandarin is nǐ hǎo. Mandarin is the official language of China, therefore most Cantonese speakers can understand Mandarin. But not many Mandarin speakers know Cantonese.
    • Romanization Systems: It uses the Latin alphabet to spell out Chinese. Pinyin is for Mandarin and Jyutping is for Cantonese. For instance, 我喜歡學中文 (pinyin – wǒ xǐ huān xué zhōng wén) and 你叫做乜野名呀 (Jyutping – néih giu jouh mātyéh meng a?).
    • Location: Mandarin mostly is used in China, Singapore, and Taiwan. Unlike Mandarin, Cantonese is not spoken or understood throughout all of China. It is most commonly spoken in Hong Kong and Guangdong Province.
